I am learning 3ds Max 9 myself currently. By far 3dbuzz.com is the way to go. Great tutorials there and their Mastering3dsmax The fundamentals is a great way to start.

I am currently in their lesson on The Talented Ball. I read a couple books first as well to grasps some concepts better. Seeing how 3ds Max is no Cheap program, make sure you get your money's worth in your investment.

Yes Hoot http://www.3dbuzz.com/ is good for the basics. However if you want to go beyond the basics I suggest checking out http://www.3dbuzz.com/ . It's a great place for learing high poloy modleing. Plus they teach you how to build robots and space ships. If you want to learn more organic modleing, go to http://www.cgsociety.org/ and look for links there.

When you start making your model post them here for us to see.

While it is more platform specific the Limited Ed. version on Unreal Tournament comes with a DVD of instructional videos for modding.

One of these days I'll get enough of a break from scripting to sit down and watch it. :(

Nhors 3D Buzz links should get you alot of plaftorm independent stuff.

Just remember bro, Don't just do a lessona nd move on. DO it til you understand everything, 5 or 6 times if neccesary. Just like an Army never runs into battle without hitting the shooting range and playing wargames, you are not going to learn it all in one fail swoop.

If ya get frustrated go take a break and come back. That alone helps me. Just remember you are learning something new. If it was easy everyone would do it.
