As everybody knows, arma is a memory sucking monster. Some may see a incredible difference with this, some may not. Why not take a chance for a smoother game?

Arma is a very dynamic game, constantly loading new data off the hard drive. And what more should I say when the developers recommend this. Get contig!
Ok, for the command prompt noobs.
Activate your command prompt, should be in start -> programs -> accessories -> command prompt.
Go to the directory where contig is located using the CD command.
EXAMPLE:
CD C:\JIMBO\CONTIGFOLDER\
After you have done this, copy the link to your arma folder. Use the link like so...
EXAMPLE:
CONTIG -s "paste link then add quotation marks around it"
It may take a while depending on the fragmentation of the game directory, so grab a cold one and browse the arma-tow forums...

Nice find. I guess anything could help improve arma performance. Oh and you can get a command prompt faster by going to Start --> Run. Type cmd. ;)

If you defrag regularly or have done recently it wont help much (if at all). Didnt do anything for me.

I was actualy able to see a difference, but only around 3fps. I've been trying defrag tricks to increase my fps. So far, I've been able to turn shadows to high on 1.08. 1.09 has always been an amazing fps helper for arma.
Still! Every time I enter a town like corezol, my fps drops to 15-18. It doesn't matter how low I turn my graphics, it seems to stay the same 15-18 in those towns. While in in forests, it's not that good, but a highly playable 20-22. In normal areas, and normal towns, my fps explodes to like 50. And when I turn my graphics down in those areas, unlike in towns, I actualy do see a fps increase to like 60 or 70. So I'm starting to think that it's my ram in those towns that seems to slow down my whole system, no matter how low I turn my graphics.

15-18? you're lucky. I get 30 on a very lucky day... I'm usually around 13-15 most of the time.

EEK!
I think I know your problem. I figured this out a a couple of days ago. I turned down my textures to low, while they were usualy at normal. The buildings seem to take up to much texture processing. I now get a fps of 20 - 22 in towns. A very stable one, even with 10 crowds of civilians. And the best part is, unless your slamming your face into the road or up against a building, you won't notice that much difference. You should try this. Strangely, it seems all graphics cards have a problem with the texturing in arma. The only card that can actualy handle arma's texturing is the 8800. So far the only problem I have is shadow lag. When I am in a area with lots of shadows, my fps doesn't matter, my keyboard and mouse lag a little bit, but not in a game wrecking way. And yes, I have done the vsync force off and that stuff. I like contig because you don't have to defrag your entire HD. But I'm also testing out UltimateDefrag, and it's "unique features".:D

Actually a few months ago I was running ArmA with a 7900GT. Well, 2 of them in SLi. But even when i turned off one card, it was able to handle the textures pretty good.
There is one trick for those of you with Nvidia GPU's. Go into your Nvidia control pannel. (Im doing this from memory so it might be a bit off) Go to the tab that lists all the game profiles. Find arma.exe. Then look at the bottom pane at all the Nvidia profile settings for arma.exe. Scroll down till you see "Force Vsync to:" Make sure its set to OFF. By default, its set to ON. This puts a tremendous load on the GPU. I gained about 10-12fps by forcing it to off. And if you're in-game graphic settings are not set overly high, you will not see any "tearing" of on-screen graphics.

I guess I can say I'm running a 7300, unless 13-15 is too low for that.

Yeah, I have a HD2600XT ati card. It's agp. I think vram is important for this game to run properly. If you think about it, it's preloading all those objects within your view distance. My motherboard is very old, so there isn't much I can do in the overclock world.
