VOIP in the new ArmA patch will be greatly improved allowing for an awesome immersive experience. It's hard to explain, fortunately Shack Tactical have been testing the new patch and have put up a detailed thread with some video examples here (http://www.flashpoint1985.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard311/ikonboard.cgi?;act=ST;f=64;t=70399).

This could really add a lot to the tournament, especially as it's TvT. There's nothing like over-hearing an incoming squad or hurling abuse at the enemy during a firefight :D

I like this one the most!

Framerate has improved a good deal, especially in North Sahrani.

Will direct chat actually work because that could seriously help to de clog ts which is always good, while still alowing you to talk about crap.

Edit: Ah right good :D just read it. When is it scheduled for release.

Heh, it's usually a good idea to read it :D

I asked for a release date but he couldn't say, I kinda expected it, but I don't think it will be too long, probably some time after Christmas.

Did you get banned for that Gin? lol. They seem to be pretty tough over there. Don't question The Dslyexi.

The VOIP sound quality in the vids seemed really poor like it is currently. Maybe its the recording but the other sound FX seemed good. Well, still a beta anyway. Hopefully, they were sucessful in fixing some of the other problems as well.

Banned for what? Asking a question? I think you mis-represent Tactical Gamer, they're not like that at all.

As for the sound quality, it's probably a combination of:

1. Being an early build
2. The video quality.

Also, as he mentions in the post, they have fixed other issues, but his post focuses on the VOIP.

Gin:
I don't represent Tactical gamer in any way. Just my opinion, Dslyexi left himself open to questions on topics other than VOIP by writing that first paragraph.

"This topic will be covering the upcoming 1.09 patch for ArmA, as experienced by myself and some fellow ShackTac members. I'll post some info and videos and then answer general questions about the patch for anyone who's interested. Bear in mind that I will not do the following:
a) Post the entire changelog (as it's still WIP)
b) Get into very fine detail about anything other than VOIP"

I didn't think people were asking question about the fine points. Seemed they were about ArmA's unresolved major issues. He as inside info about the patch people are fanatically awaiting, posts about it, gets a bit snippy with people who ask questions then BIS forums hammered those who sniped back. This made me laugh.

Again, just my opinion, but if he didn't want questions on items other than VOIP he should have made that explicitly clear or had the thread locked as read-only.

Now we are discussing Dslyexi instead of VOIP. That's off topic! Damn, I hope I don't get banned.

Ok, last comment on this slight tangent.

Dslyexi has no affiliation with TG, he just posts there. He posted a copy of the post from the BIS forums which is the one I saw. If he responded badly to people over at BIS that's his business, I'm sure there were a fair share of silly questions, but there was no problem over at TG.

Anyway, I had a few suggestions of how to work the communications with the addition of VOIP. It's just a rough outline, so feel free to point out glaring flaws and give suggestions.

Use direct communication for talking to squad/fire-team members nearby and members of other squads.

Use side channel for squad members who need to contact a SL or FTL not in their squad who is not close by for whatever reason. Side channel could also be used for messages to the whole army.

Armour crews would obviously be able to use Vehicle channel to communicate (which would be especially effective with armour columns to avoid heavy traffic).

Have Command Chat on Teamspeak for SL's to communicate with each other, this way each squad know where the others are (like the second video in the 1.09 post). Hopefully, with the reduced radio traffic the SL's should be able to hear the incoming messages.

Squad members, or Fire-Team leaders can communicate in channel to communicate with their SL if they are not close by.

Ha! I can still post! Nhor has no power!:p

Gin,
Now I understand. The whole TG thing threw me a bit. Your link went straight to the BIS forums. So I had no idea of your or his affiliation with TG and I wasn't busting on you or TG. The BIS thread was where my banned joke came from. The panties got bunched real quick in that one. :)

Anyway, I hope they get it working and I can't wait to try it. 'Cause, like a lot of others, I can't see the difference between that type of VOIP setup and TS2 with channel commander and whispers. I gotta get some hands-on.

I think the main thing to note that the Direct Communication channel is positional, so you will hear the person speaking as if their avatar is speaking, the further away they are the quieter they will be.

The advantage of the different VOIP channels is that it will reduce radio clutter, leading to better and more efficient communication.

Yeah but if it works poorly it doesn't really matter. If it doesn't approach the quality of TS than we might as well leave it in the box.

I more concerened with how much lagg will be introduced into the game

Lag is a concern too. I'd like to give it a try, but if the quality isn't there or it's as unreliable as the current VOIP then I'm afraid we should ditch it. We could create an effective comms system with whispers and CC I believe if needed.

Sounded preety good to me. I am worried about ht range of it because it needs to be wide enough so we can hear without having to be ontop of each other.

It's realistic, so don't expect to hear people a mile away, if you can't quite hear someone, shout, it'll add to the immersion ;)

THAT WAS HILARIOUS. You hear him crying all the way like even when he is out of range and the only one who can hear him is the one chasing him. Got to love the hydrolics on the BMP though.
