View Full Version : VOIP Comms

There has been some interest expressed in experimenting with using the built in VOIP comms in ArmA, along with TS.
The theory behind this interest is having soldiers in the same unit or vehicle use the ArmA comms and unit officers cross-communicate using TS.
I have no idea what type of server or bandwidth impact this may have on a large game.

I keep hearing some things about firewall issues with some people. But we can test it with the SOP of only using it for direct communications as well as the awesome advantage of Vehicle Communication. If we limit our ingame comms to those two areas I think in combination with TS2 it could minimize an bandwidth concerns.
I say we try it in our Fun Test schedule for this Sunday 1700 GMT

Sure. Enable it on the server so its running. I'll let my guys know it will be on. :)

Sounds good. Unless my system crashes again. We tried it last night on Michael's server and my system kept crashing. Not sure what the cause of it was. I attempted to duplicate it as much as possible buy running on my local server but no problems. If it crashes on Sunday, I'll turn off my in VOIP.

So are we gonna test just for preformance issues or do we setup our comms to test the theory behinde the suggestion aswell.
Can direct chat be forced btw?

Yes it can. It's called Command Decision. We should also test under Group Chat as well though. I'd imagine communicating under a Direct Channel would have more of an impact on the server due to the amount of people is would potentially have to be transmitted to. Just my 2 cents.

What are the benefits of using Group Chat compaired to TS.

GUYS NEWS FROM THE TESTING FRONT. After extensive testing of VOIP I say that we decline using it. it is too random to work well in game. At no point in the process of testing was my VOIP experience the same from spawn to spawn disconnect and reconnect. The Volumes all changed from ok to low and other times it stopped working entirely and then it would work awesome. Its just to inconsistant. My vote is we dont mess with it, because if everyone cant utylize it than we should just stick with TS. rumor is it will be improved in 1.09 Other rumores are 1,09 doesnt exist. lol I love BIS

I'm not sure about TS vs. Group Chat. The main benefit, I think, would be between Group Channel and Direct Channel.

Im willing to give it one FunTest day. Im not crazy about it either. But at least we can say we tried it and everyone will get to voice an opinion on it. From my experiences of it on other public server, im with you mike. In theory, its great. In reality, it comes up short. Maybe for 1.09?

Well, looks like I solved my crash issue. It was NOT caused my VOIP. So I'm willing to give it a test.

Direct Chat would be preety nice to use in game as it give you a chance to communicate very closely with your squad or battle buddy with out confusing the hell out of your squad leader or commander.
Of course as i said at IC ArmA, this is ArmA.

we tried for a fun test a couple weeks ago and it was a failure. Not so much the idea of it but that it just doesn't work. Poor quality sound even if people could get it to work at all. Another fine BIS product.

BIS says it is working on this VoN for the next 1.09 patch. And they said it is difficult to test and is part of the reason for the 1.09 patch delays. That and the anti-cheat support they are trying to add-in. We can revisit this feature after 1.09 patch is released.
