View Full Version : Graphical Problems with ArmA 2

I finally got ArmA 2, sadly it did not run as well as I thought it would. I currently run the game with normal/low settings with all extra options (shadows, anti-aliasing, etc.) disabled. I experience frequent texture pop-ins and sometimes it takes half a minute for an object to fully load. I sometimes experience just blurbs rather than objects. I also experience a blur issue where objects that are almost 10 yards away look sort of distorted until I come two feet next to it and then it clears up. I have lag but not to much and I don't think ArmA 2 is supposed to run this way.
I have an Intel dual core processor at 2ghz
3 gbs of ram
GeForce 8600gts 256mb graphics card
and Windows Vista Ultimate 32
should I overclock......get a new PC entirely.......or is it a software issue
or are there tweaks that I can do in the system folder to limit lag and texture problems without making it look like shit.

Make sure 3D res is higher or the same as interface res. Cos if it isn't everything is blurred.

oh yeah I set my res the same as interface and the same as my desktop

Try changing your video memory to normal or low (probably low). That should help with the textures popping in like that.

yeah no change....well some but things seem to have more of a blur until you get up right next to them
I'm thinking of overclocking....what do you think is a stable speed for my processor...its old and its dual core, so I'm guessing not a lot

Blur is usually caused by the 3D res being higher than the interface res, or post processing. When I turned my video memory to normal and jigged the graphics to low or normal and all of those "effects" things to disabled, I was pretty stable at 1000m view. Had about 15fps average, which was playable. It really comes down to what to can't live without, but sometimes when you fix the video settings while playing, the blur comes back for some reason, you just have to get out of the "mission" and restart it.
Then I got another 2GB RAM and a "new" video card and it fixed all of that.

To get rid of the blur effect as you turn or move, turn off post process effects and it should vanish entirely.
Make sure that all your graphic settings are the same i.e: 1900*1200 for both settings to avoid blocky looking graphics etc.
Run the game on normal for all other settings if your system allows it, mine will run it maxed out and give me (25-35+ fps) but i prefer to run it at normal settings to increase my frame rate (30-50+ fp) and its less jerky in built up areas if i am moving fast in a vehicle etc.
Some people may have to run everything on low depending on graphics card, cpu and memory etc.

Yes I know, my resolution is the same for everything (desktop and interface) and I had to turn everything to low. Still experience the problem including lag issues, but it was like this for ArmA 1 in the beginning. So I will just wait until a new patch will make it more optimized. I know a lot of people who experience these problems so at least I know its not just my game or my hardware.

right try this.
remove you're videotape drivers completely (search how guz i dont know how to do that)
and install the latest and greatest version of the nvidea drivers.
since that is something that should help or so i have been told.

The two largest towns have terrible performance because of texture problems with the buildings. Thats why people have terrible texture stuttering and other glitches. I think we just need to stay away from those two towns in campaign 1. I like the wilderness and "small" towns anyway.

Noted. Now, prepare for C0.

Get contig.exe from sysinternals and defrag your Arma Directories. Fragmented pbo files can seriously degrade texture loading times.
Your biggest problem could well be the processor, 2GHz is def. on the low side; and for PvP dual-core makes next to knack-all difference to performance.
Its straight line speed that gets the job done in this game, so an overclock or a grab a new processor.
The nvidia drivers have had a problem with correctly detecting video memory also, so if in doubt video memory=low; this might explain any texture and vertext corruption esp. if the .RPT file is full of "allocating vertex buffer" errors.
Other make sure you have shadows=low, and post-processing low or off, and keep your view distance low ie.<1km; as you said you have in your first post.

If you are running 8GB of RAM you must disable/take out some of it. As long as it is less than 8 you are fine. I don't know if it was solved yet but it's worth repeating. Solved the artifacts on low settings and the choppy performance for me.
